Raise your hand if you grew up in Newfoundland and Labrador with some attachment to the game of bingo? We doubt there are many of your digits pointed southward.
Most if not all of us have some loving affinity for the game – whether attending rural halls for shared games with friends, or following along on your community channel with nan and auntie, it’s something of a tradition here in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Weekly Thrills
Newfoundland and Labrador Jackpot Bingo on NTV is taking that age-old island tradition and spotlighting it on a provincial and even national stage, for a weekly game that will thrill audiences, will raising funds for a worthy cause.
“We kind of came up with the idea through the smaller community charitable bingos that have been going on for the last 30 years,” shared producer Ian Lynch. “It came into our heads that it would be a really great fundraising opportunity to raise good money for charities across the province and to get an actual province-wide bingo game.”
Newfoundland and Labrador’s first province-wide live bingo event will air every Sunday at 4:30 pm on NTV, with bingo cards available online and across dozens of retailers across the province.
The program itself has a distinctive Newfoundland flavour, with island tunes and even spots of comedy to entertain audiences in between games.
“It’s a good way to break up the game and it’s a good way to capture the audience,” Lynch says. “Also it really cuts to the core of the Newfoundland culture and comedy. We’re really trying to bring it back and hit those notes from the Tommy Sexton days. When you think of Newfoundland comedy that’s one of the things that you think of. We really want to keep it within that culture.”
And while the entertainment factor is key, being able to give back to various local causes is the icing on the cake for all hands involved. Charities like the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Command of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Atlantic Star Foundation are just some of the beneficiaries of proceeds from the game.
“The main goal is to raise as much money as possible, but also create a fun kind of family game that you can play at home,” Lynch explains. “You can get together with friends and family, enjoy the game, possibly win some money. It’s one of those things that is a lost cultural connection in Newfoundland, how often do families get together now and do things together. We’re trying to capture that and bring people together to have a good time. They may not realize it but they’re also raising money for charities.”
Across the Nation
With an innovative province wide concept that can realistically reach viewers across the nation through NTV, the fine folks at NL Jackpot Bingo hope to share a taste of who and what we are, while serving up good times for a good cause in the process.
“We thought NTV would be perfect to broadcast this. They have that provincial history and the broadcast capability to reach all of our viewers that we intend to reach,” says Lynch. “If someone is watching this outside of Newfoundland we really want them to know that, hey, you’re watching a Newfoundland show here, produced by Newfoundlanders, with Newfoundland comedy. It’s an old-school Newfoundland good time.”
