Multi-talented singer/songwriter/actor Tyler Shaw heads back to this province, taking a moment to chat about life, love and career highs
=====
Tyler Shaw doesn’t mind sharing. Case in point, the fact the video for his popular single With You (certified Platinum by Music Canada) features some very personal moments from his real-life wedding.
He laughs. “I obviously had a discussion with my wife. I didn’t just put it out there aimlessly or without her consent. But, you know, it was a beautiful day. By far the most beautiful day of both of our lives so far and we decided to share the song with the world, basically. And we had no issues with that,” he offers.
It’s been about seven years since Shaw visited this province, doing what he calls a “small acoustic tour.”
Return to the rock
“I literally went from coast to coast in Newfoundland and went from St. John’s all the way over to Gander and beyond Corner Brook. So that was a lot of fun so I’m really, really excited to come back to ‘The Rock.’’’
Shaw, who will be performing at The Rec Room in St. John’s on November 17th, says that he’s been “astonished” by his fan base and by his music’s reach.
“You know, as an artist, you only hope that the music reaches as far as possible because of the message within the music. You want people to relate and you want people to listen to it and feel what you’re feeling or you want to help them through a situation.”
With 22 million plus views on his videos alone, he’s no doubt accomplished that.
“My jaw drops. I’m super grateful. I’m super, super thankful for everyone who has supported the music and who has watched the videos or has purchased my music. I couldn’t ask for anything more. So the fans, they’re the reason I’m doing what I’m doing today. I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”
Shaw, who hails from British Columbia, will be finishing his tour there on home soil. He admits it’s been a while since he’s been on a stage on home turf.
“This is by far the biggest and longest tour I’ve done to date. So ending it off in my hometown of Vancouver is going to be very, very special. You know, all my friends will be there so it’s going to be a special night. But until then, we’re definitely focused on the dates that are coming up.” Like Newfoundland.
A special moment
Shaw, whose Juno award nominated album, Intuition features hits like To The Man Who Let Her Go, has worked and met some greats in the music industry.
“Selena Gomez was definitely one of the highlights. She is amazing and an amazing human being. David Foster would have to be up there. We had a great chat during this year’s Junos backstage and he said, ‘you know, I expect great things from you.’ So that was a very special moment. The list goes on. You take (these meetings as an) opportunity and you learn from them and you ask questions.’’
Shaw’s talent shone through at an early age, he shares. “When I first pick up my guitar for the first time, I just started writing my own music. I guess I have been writing ever since I was 13 years old.”
Besides music and film (he made his acting debut in the 2017 Canadian independent film The Meaning of Life, directed by Cat Hostick) he also is a public supporter and fund-raiser for breast cancer research. Shaw explains that cancer has touched his family on a very personal level and that it’s a cause near and dear to his heart.
Also near and dear? His fans. Shaw is excited to revisit this province, and it shows.
“I like to have a good time. And I know Newfoundlanders, you like a party, so be sure to come out and we will have a great time together.”
