Herald’s Q&A: BRDGS

NL’s Jon Pike has emerged as one of Canada’s most promising pop prospects.

Fans of The Herald may know Jon Pike from his pop-rock duo Everglow. But the talented singer-songwriter has been making waves of a different kind, becoming one of Canada’s more promising musical prospects under the name BRDGS. In the wake of his new single All My Friends and an opening slot for Billboard chart-topper Nelly, Pike caught up with The Herald for a chat.

The last time you caught up with Herald readers you were a part of Everglow. Take us through the journey to becoming BRDGS?

Jon Pike: I moved to Toronto in the fall of 2016. At the time we were still doing Everglow, and we had moved there to start that band together. We arrived and that’s when that stopped. So it was like okay, let’s find out what to do now. BRDGS was that move.

So where did you go from there? I’d imagine there were some indecisive and uncertain days?

Jon Pike: I had no idea what I was supposed to do, to be honest with you. What I actually had been doing a lot of, and continued to do, was booking sessions as a songwriter for other artists. I started calling everyone I knew in Toronto and would say let’s get together and try to write a song for this person or that person. I was doing that and at the same time trying to pursue being an artist. I developed BRDGS almost as a side project, because I didn’t have much legs as a performing act at that point. Just being in Toronto and not really knowing anyone in that world. I released a couple of songs, the second one being In The Wild, which I kind of released not knowing what would come of it. It kind of took off and that’s what really sparked BRDGS being what it is now. I’m just so happy that I get to be an artist.

Getting to perform alongside the likes of Nelly, Virgina to Vegas and Ria Mae is career-changing stuff. How can you sum up what these opportunities mean to you as an artist?

Jon Pike: It’s pretty wild to think about. When I got to Toronto and Everglow fell apart, I wasn’t sure I was ever going to be an artist again. I thought to myself, maybe I’ve played my last show. Since then things have really started to bubble up and things have been happening so fast. For something like Nelly to happen, I think it’s all an elaborate joke.

I know friends and family back home here in Newfoundland have been amazingly supportive. What has that meant to you, especially being away from this island?

Jon Pike: It’s been really, really cool to see the support. Even from friends of mine or the general Newfoundland population. The way that In The Wild song took off started here in Newfoundland and St. John’s. Being able to still have that connection to home even though sometimes I don’t feel connected because I’m so far away, is really cool and really encouraging. I never want to lose that part of who I am as a person. It’s really nice to be able to come back and do a big show like this and connect with a lot of people for the first time.
