We’re in the thick of it now friends. The Christmas season is upon us, and she is unrelenting in her speed. There’s much to do, much to buy, and even more to organize. How do we possibly have time for it all?

Originated in Dunville in 1990, Hickey’s has fast become one of the most trusted and respected brands in the commercial greenhouse industry in the province, with owner and operate Len Hickey sharing his 26-plus years of experience with eager customers on the Avalon and beyond. 

“We were only a one-season greenhouse,” explains Len’s partner Elaine Hickey. “When we started in 1990 we were only open from April till the end of July. After we moved we decided to move into the fall and then subsequently into the Christmas season. Right now we’re open three seasons of the year.” 

Opening a new location in Kelligrews while still operating their Dunville location seasonally, Hickey’s is a provincial institution and go-to for everything from floral arrangements, vegetables and herbs, patio furniture, home and garden decor and more.

“We have stuff you won’t see everywhere else,” Hickey explains. “In order for us to survive and beat the competition in a sense, we have to have something different to bring people in … It’s unique and not something you’re going to see on everyones shelves.”

And the holidays? Hickey’s has that down to a science, boasting a jaw dropping Christmas stock that includes everything to maximize cheer without the hassle and stress. 

“We carry everything, from pre-lit Christmas trees to Santas, everything you can think of,” Hickey shares, explaining that the team boasts some of the best designers in the business. 

“We feel we have the best designers on staff. They can turn their hand to anything and create anything. They have the place looking like a real wonderland. I watch so many people come in, stop in their tracks and say wow. And I’ll say thank you, that was what we were trying to create, that wow factor. 

A Form of Flattery

“People come in and get ideas, which we encourage,” she adds. “I look at it as the greatest compliment that somebody would want to take a picture and try to replicate what we have. People will buy what we have, go home and try to recreate it.”

Whether it’s holiday must-haves, Spring prep or bulking up on green-thumb necessities, Hickey’s is among the best in the business, continuing to strive towards a business model that puts customer needs, and quality, in the forefront.
