Music Spotlight: Owen Mac

Fourteen-year-old Irish singing sensation Owen Mac brings his talents to Newfoundland and Labrador for the first time this August

Unicorn Promotions Presents, Ireland’s newest singing sensation Owen Mac, performing at the Sheila Nageira Theatre in Carbonear and Holy Heart Theatre in St. John’s on August 10-11 this summer.

First Trip to Newfoundland

“I’ve always wanted to visit Canada,” Mac shared all the way from his home in Northern Ireland. “I know a lot of my fans are over in Canada. When I heard it was Newfoundland, I had heard it was a lovely place. Me, my ma and dad are really looking forward to coming over and seeing it for the first time.”

The 14-year-old native of Coleraine, Northern Ireland has become an overnight Internet sensation, garnering millions of video views for his soulful hybrid of Irish, American and contemporary music.

For Mac, who began singing at two and-a-half years of age, family ties have always drawn him towards an interest in music and the arts.

“I started singing two and-a-half, nearly three years ago now. I started when I was about 12 and-a-half. I always heard dad singing in the house and singing the Irish country music. I suppose it was just in the blood really. Mom and dad and the two sisters have been huge supporters for me.”

Citing Irish greats Daniel O’Donnell and Jimmy Buckley, as well as American country singers like Marty Robbins and Ray Price and Rascal Flatts as influences, Mac’s catalogue includes the debut album Especially For You, Heart & Soul, My Journey, and the fan favourite DVD, An Irish Heart.

Though his rise to prominence has been meteoric, to say the least, the young artist never takes his fans for granted.

“It does feel pretty good,” he says of his growing fanbase. “Sometimes I’ll scroll through them and it would sort of make me feel like I can’t believe it really. It sort of pushes me to go further and keep trying my best really.”

Career in Music

Joining Owen on his Newfoundland dates will be his father, Dessie Mac, a fine musician in his own right, and Conal Gallen, dubbed as ‘Ireland’s funniest comedian.’

Moving forward, Owen Mac hopes to stay grounded, but is confident enough in his abilities that he hopes to make a career doing what he loves; making music.

“I would love to make it in music, but I’m just going to take it one day at a time and see what happens,” he says. “I definitely want music to be my career.”

Mac leaves some parting words for his fans in Newfoundland and Labrador, with the promise to treat neighbours across the Atlantic to an amazing night of music.

“I would like to bring my music and hopefully everyone will enjoy it. I like to get the audience members involved.”

I was at a funeral service and I heard Mike Manuel and I look that up on my computer and I seen Owen Mac on there and I listen to him. I was inspired by his voice and his music. I tried to order his CD of My Journey and it was out of stock. So I ordered the CD This I Promise You, but I still want the other one. I will still probably order more of his CDs. Great voice. Keep up the great work. I am from Iowa, in the United States of America

From Chicago USA, and as a musician and country music singer myself, I am really hoping, praying and rooting for you, Owen. You are sure to rise all the way to the top of a musical profession with your talent and your fine voice. Your timing is spot on. Be of strong character, Owen, and do your best to make good decisions as you enjoy your music. You are so fortunate to have such a fine Dad and Mother as your guides. You will need them. In the meantime, I will continue to play Marlena at least 4 times a day and enjoy your “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be” CD* while in my car. Bless you Owen and I pray God protect and keep you safe from all harm. What a wonderful gift you are giving to the world.
*I am purchasing 3 more of this CD as gifts for others.
