Oh Baby!! Sheerr Bliss

Cupid’s arrow could not have pierced two finer hearts

It’s a romance worthy of countless sentiments – from ‘meant to be’ to ‘happily ever after’ – but the latest chapter in their storybook courtship is the impending arrival of their little princess.

‘A Big Surprise’

Eddie and Susan Sheerr are expecting. The cute couple made it official as only a television broadcaster could do on Nov. 21, announcing it live on air. Oh, but it was so much more, an unexpected phone call during the show with mom-to-be inquiring about, yes, the long-range forecast. Eddie’s answer, of course, is their baby girl, expected to arrive on May 16.

“I wanted it to be a big surprise for everyone,” he says, with a chuckle. “We couldn’t be more excited to have a little girl on the way.”

Mission accomplished. Yes, not even Lynn and Glen were ready for the baby news, and it was obvious from the pure shock on their faces. Viewers at home were equally delighted. The station was flooded with well wishes from all over the province, and abroad. “It’s such an exciting time for us and we’re enjoying every moment,” Eddie says.

But it was a secret that seemed near impossible to keep. “We were busting to share the amazing news with everyone,” he says.

The beautiful ‘Mommy-to-be’ looks radiant with her little baby bump and wide smile. Despite a little morning sickness and fatigue, and the occasional craving for ice water, it’s been a smooth few months.

“I got off to a little bit of a rough start but I’m happy to say I’m feeling much better now,” says Susan, admitting she does miss the occasional glass of wine and sushi.

Island Romance

Eddie, of course, immediately fell in love with this province when he arrived in 2013 – the people, scenery, traditions and culture. He literally plunged his heart into the cold Atlantic (seriously, he actually dove into the frigid ocean for an NTV commercial shoot several years ago). He embraced the island’s lore – from enjoying a boil up in the woods after an afternoon on the skidoo to running the Tely 10 and turning heads at North America’s oldest-running sporting event. “What’s not to love about this amazing province?” he asks, answering his own question. “It’s amazing.”

But nothing has captured Eddie’s heart more than a beautiful girl from Bishops Falls, Susan. She’s now Susan Sheerr although some joke it’s really Susan Eddy-Sheerr or Suzie Sheerr – a variation of names that are almost as cute as they are. They met in early 2015, were engaged later that year and married on Dec. 30, 2016.

And, now, they’re so excited to start a family. “At first, when we found out Susan was pregnant, it was a bit surreal. I don’t think either one of us truly believed it until we had the pre-natal appointment where we heard her heartbeat for the first time. That was something neither one of us will ever forget,” he says.

“I think Susan feels like she knows her already as she’s moving around quite a bit in her belly. Every day or two Susan will tell me she’s kicking, and grab my hand and put it on her belly. I’ve felt her kick a few times and each time I think it’s amazing.

“We were seeing a movie a few weeks ago and she kicked so hard Susan and I joked she was trying to punch her way out,” he says, laughing. “I think she has a love for popcorn like her mother.”

The nursery is already being prepared for the big arrival. “I think once that is done, it’s going to start to get a bit more real that our lives are about to change forever, for the better,” says NTV’s chief meteorologist.

“A family of our own is something Susan and I have wanted for a long time and we couldn’t be happier to be welcoming this little girl into our lives. I think Susan is going to be a great mom, and I’m excited to be a dad.”

The countdown, they say, is on. “We can’t wait meet our little girl for the first time. Getting to hold her and look at her little face, hold her little hands,” Susan says. “We can’t even put that excitement into words.”

‘Incredibly Excited’

Family, of course, is a part of who we are. Families help shape our values and provide a sense of belonging. Both Eddie and Susan’s families are very close and it’s especially magical for Nanny and Poppy Eddy.

“Our families are incredibly excited. Susan’s parents are going to be first-time grandparents and for my parents, it’s going to be their third grandchild – all are girls. Susan and I are trying to figure out how we’re going to manage all our guests … maybe we will need a sign-up sheet,” he says with a laugh. “But, in reality, we really can’t wait to share our little girl with our families and I know they are just as excited as we are to meet her.”

So will their new princess be a figure skater or rower? Perhaps both. Susan has been figure skating since she was just four years old and continues to skate. “I’d love to introduce her to figure skating and she may also want to be a hockey player like her dad,” says Susan, who is taking a one year break from the ice.

Eddie, as a member of the NTV men’s crew, is a competitive rower who has competed in the men’s championship race in recent years. When not pulling an oar, he’s steering other crews as a coxswain.

“Whatever our daughter would like to do, we will fully support,” he says. “I think being part of a team is a great experience for kids.”

So for now Eddie and Susan will savor the moment and embrace the magic. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, their love is growing every day.
