Rising star Paige Penney dives deep into her acclaimed debut EP Watch Out For Your Step, sharing inspirations and notable fan favourite collaborations
====
For fifteen year old singer-songwriter Paige Penney, her latest single Shooting Star is quite prophetic.
Penney, who has collaborated with the likes of The Once and Alan Doyle, recently netted two MusicNL nominations to go alongside a pair of wins for MusicNL’s Newfoundland Talent Contest, and a praised debut EP recorded at Nashville’s Dark Horse Studio.

Penney caught up with The Newfoundland Herald for a deep dive into Watch Out For Your Step, the first in what we’re confident will be a slew of successes for one of this province’s more promising music prospects.
Watch Out For Your Step
Watch Out For Your Step is the title track of my debut EP. It was co-written by me and my dad Kirk Penney. When I recorded Watch Out For Your Step in Nashville, we showed the session players a video of me and The Once playing Watch Out For Your Step at their Christmas show in 2016.
The session players said the song should sound just like the video, so that’s what we did. I asked The Once if they would sing on the track and they added so much to it. They are so talented and I feel so grateful to have worked with them.
Shooting Star
Shooting Star is song co-written by Alan Doyle, my dad Kirk Penney and myself. It’s about working hard and making your dreams come true. On February 2nd of 2020 I came out with a music video for the song which included Alan Doyle in it and the video was directed by Roger Maunder. I had so much fun making the video. There were so many different scenes I got shoot.
The first scene we shot was on Signal Hill by Cabot Tower. We had a concert at the top of the hill and got some awesome shots! A bunch of people came out that day and are now featured in the video! Another scene we shot was in Quidi Vidi with Alan Doyle. In the video Alan plays a cab driver and it’s hilarious! We had so much fun on set and I learned so much. We also filmed on an airplane which was SUPER awesome. We had the whole plane to ourselves and got to film there.
Stop was such a cool song to write and record. In the writing process of this song I had no idea that it would turn out to be a killer pop country tune. I remember the night I recorded this song at Dark Horse Recording in Nashville where Taylor Swift recorded her first album. It was such an amazing night, we started recording early but recording was going so well we stayed in the studio till midnight! I remember listening to Stop when it was finished on the big speakers in the studio, it was a surreal experience I will never forget.
Leave A Mark
Leave A Mark was the last song written and recorded on my EP. This song was in the writing process for a while but it’s one of my favourite songs me and my dad Kirk Penney have co-wrote. We recorded this song at my house a few months before the album release. I loved the song so much, it had to make the record. I actually played piano on this track so this song is extra special to me.
